BENGALURU:
Cybercriminals cheated a 25-year-old woman, who purchased lipstick on an
e-commerce platform, of over Rs 3.3 lakh.
The fraudsters made her believe she had been chosen to avail massive discounts that included a laptop and an iPhone following the purchase of the lipstick and later took her money in the name of investment.
Sudha (name changed), a resident of Hebbal and a private firm employee, filed a complaint with
North CEN crime police on May 7.
After she purchased lipstick on April 20, she received phone calls from two unknown numbers. The callers, claiming to be representatives of the e-commerce firm, asked her to purchase a laptop and an iPhone for a cheaper price — an offer she was eligible for as she bought lipstick recently.
After judging her financial resources, they laid a trap to steal her money soon after she showed interest in purchasing a laptop. They told her they would pay 10% per month as profit against the investment. She believed them and transferred Rs 3,34,958. Only when she discussed it with her friends, she realised it was a fraud.
Police are trying to trace the suspects with the help of mobile numbers and bank account details.
