GURUGRAM : The district consumer forum has imposed a combined fine of Rs 3.8 lakh on a pet owner in a case related to a 2020 attack by the dog on a minor girl inside an elevator. The domestic staffer of another flat in the The
Magnolias society entered the lift with the dog, which was not on a leash, according to a complaint.
The dog allegedly pounced on the girl and injured her. The domestic staffer got off the lift with the pet and the girl reached her uncle’s house, after which she was taken to a hospital. Traumatised by the incident, she spent two weeks at home and could not attend school, complainant Magnolias resident Pankaj Agarwal alleged.
He said he reached out to the dog’s owner, the security in-charge and the society’s management but they did not take cognisance of his complaint. It was after this that he approached the district consumer forum.
The complainant had argued before the forum that he pays a rent of Rs 3 lakh and other charges amounting to Rs 1 lakh every month. Despite these costs, his daughter’s safety was compromised, he argued.
The forum passed the order in favour of Agarwal on Tuesday. The penalty, it ordered, must be given with an additional 9% interest since the date of admission of the case. The society management did not respond to TOI’s requests for a comment.
