GSEB 12th Science result 2022 declared: 72% students declared pass

Though the pass percentage is marginally higher than 71.34 per cent recorded in 2019-20 and 71.90 per cent in 2018-19, schools as well as students were expecting better results owing to comparatively easier question papers, increased percentage of multiple choice questions (MCQs) and an increase in the number of choices in the general section.

The Gujarat state board exams were conducted after a gap of an academic year due to the pandemic. The last board exams were conducted in March 2020. There were no exams in the academic year 2020-21 and saw mass promotions due to the pandemic.

Over 1.06 lakh students had appeared for the Class 12 science stream examinations that were conducted between March 28 and April 8.

“At the time of exams, no student feared or faced difficulty in attempting the questions. Overall, the exams were easier as compared to the previous years. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, perhaps, the students lost the practice of writing,” said Rakesh Patel, principal of Tripada High School.

Harshil Thakkar, a student from non-medical stream, who scored 64 per cent and 70 percentile said: “I was expecting more marks as I had worked harder.”

When asked if the pandemic and online classes have impacted the results, he said: “That could have been a year ago but not this year.” However, he admitted that students had lost the practise of writing exams during the pandemic years.

GSHSEB Chairman A J Shah said: “Students might feel they have done and written well but it is evaluators’ (duty) to check how much was required as per the questions and how much written. Students have a chance for rechecking and revaluation of their answer sheets.”

A total of 1,06,347 students, including 95,361 regular and 10,986 repeaters, appeared for the Class 12 Science exams. Among them, 68,681 regular students qualified for the pass certificate recording a pass percentage of 72.02 per cent. In the repeat category, 2,619 were declared pass recording a pass percentage of 23.84 per cent.

The overall pass percentage was 72.05 among females, marginally higher than their male counterparts at 72 per cent.

Among districts, Rajkot secured the top position with 85.78 pass percentage while Dahod was at the bottom with 40.19 per cent.

Notably, there is a wide gap of 10 per cent between the pass percentage of Group A and Group B students. While 78.40 per cent of students who opted for Group A passed, the pass percentage was 68.58 per cent among Group B (Biology) students. The students who opted for both the groups A and B secured a pass percentage of 78.38 per cent.

Though less than the 74.02 per cent recorded in 2019-20, the English medium students recorded the highest pass percentage—at 72.57 per cent—this year, followed by Gujarati medium students who bettered from 70.77 per cent in 2019-20 to 72.04 per cent this year.

Students from the Marathi medium recorded the lowest pass percentage at 40.23 per cent, while Urdu medium students recorded 64.21 per cent and Hindi medium 60.99 per cent.

The number of schools with less than 10 per cent and less pass percentage declined from 68 to 61 this year. Sixty four schools secured 100 per cent results.
