MUMBAI: Active Covid-19 cases in the city have increased by nearly 35% in the past 10 days but hospitalisations haven’t seen any concerning rise.
Maharashtra reported 223 fresh cases on Tuesday, including 122 from Mumbai. The city had 628 active cases at the beginning of the month which has steadily increased to 844 as of Tuesday. In fact, the city has been clocking an average of 100 new cases daily for the past eight days, but daily admissions to Covid hospitals have been in the range of two to five. Currently, only 25 of the city’s 25,249 Covid-19 beds are occupied.
Epidemiologist Dr Jayaprakash Muliyil told TOI, “What we are seeing now is fluctuation in cases. It is caused by the spread of infection among people who haven’t got the Omicron variant already. And second but more importantly, some cases could be reinfection, which we need to monitor.”
