Amit Shah attacks Mamata Banerjee govt over influx, heaps praise on Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Union home minister Amit Shah attacked Mamata Banerjee’s government for not cooperating with the Centre in preventing infiltration from Bangladesh while he heaped praises on the BJP-led Assam government for supporting Delhi in this cause. BJP has been targeting Mamata over influx, which is a major issue in Assam, with anxieties over the change of demography due to alleged infiltration playing a big role in BJP’s rise and success. Shah made this fresh attack against Mamata’s party Trinamool Congress, here while addressing a public rally to mark the first anniversary of the Assam government.
Shah said, “The BJP government of Assam along with the CAPF (central armed paramilitary force), with the help of the central government, has worked to build an impenetrable wall against infiltration in the state. The Narendra Modi government at the Centre is trying to stop infiltration in both the states of West Bengal and Assam. While the Trinamool government in West Bengal has failed, the Himanta Biswa Sarma government of Assam is trying to stop infiltration. The Sarma government is standing like a rock against infiltration and with the policy of the government of India.” Shah, who is in the state on a two-day visit, started his first day with a trip to the Indo-Bangladesh border where he reviewed the border protection system.
On Tuesday here, he said, “During election we had also promised the people of Assam that we will stop infiltration in the state. I visited the Bangladesh border. Figures show that during the six years of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s rule, infiltration in Assam has been hugely controlled and now it is almost non-existent.”
