MUMBAI: A sessions court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for attempting to stab his wife to death in 2018. The accused, Chandrakant Gholap, was found guilty under the ‘attempt to murder’ charge.
Public prosecutor Shankar Erande cited the evidence of seven witnesses — including the victim, her daughter and neighbour to seek conviction of the accused. While the victim, Mangla Gholap, and the neighbour were eyewitnesses, the daughter saw the accused fleeing from the spot after the attack. The couple had an acrimonious relationship for many reasons, including money and the man’s drinking habit.
An FIR was registered at Deonar police station in September 2018 against him.
It was the prosecution’s case that on September 3 2018, around 8.30 am, on a street in Gautam Nagar close to their home, the accused assaulted Mangla with a knife on her head, neck and cheek. Mangla screamed for help and collapsed. Her daughter, who rushed to her aid, took her to the hospital. The victim spent many days in hospital. The accused was arrested.
Gholap has been in jail. His attempts to seek bail were rejected by court. During his bail hearings, he claimed he was falsely implicated by his wife as she wanted to grab his property. He also stated he was suffering from psychological illness because of her.
