CUDDALORE: A gang of more than 10 burglars, escaped after hurling petrol bombs at a police team, which foiled their attempts to steal industrial equipment and materials at an abandoned oil refinery unit in the early hours of Wednesday in Cuddalore district. Three of the six petrol bombs hurled by the gang members exploded. None of the police team members were, however, injured in the attack. A private firm, which commenced work to establish an oil refinery under the third phase of Sipcot expansion project in two villages in the district a few years ago abandoned the project after the 2011 Thane cyclone. The project site contained several crores worth of industrial equipment and materials and burglars frequently target the abandoned unit and loot the valuables.
