PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday said that sex trafficking will not be tolerated in Goa.
He said that since 93% of sex trafficking cases are from outside the state, he will take up the issue with Union home minister Amit Shah during his next visit to New Delhi.
“Multi stakeholders training programme will be conducted in Goa to ensure that the members of the law enforcement agencies are well-equipped to handle the situation of trafficking in Goa,” he said.
He said that Goa has some of the best practices which need to be replicated by other state governments, especially relating to victim-friendly rescue by police, victim-friendly inquiry by the sub-divisional magistrate and provision of alternative livelihood provided to the victims of sex-trafficking by Arz (Anyay Rahit Zindagi), NGO, in Goa.
“Sex trafficking is one of the worst forms of violence committed against girls and women and Goa government in collaboration with the central government will find solutions to control inter-country and intra-country trafficking,” the chief minister said.
Sawant held a meeting with Arz regarding trafficking in Goa. Arz director Arun Pandey submitted a research report on trafficking in Goa.
Pandey told the CM that Goa is one of the main destination states for sex trafficking. Victims are from 24 states of India and countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and central Asia.
The Arz director also told the CM about the challenges faced by the law enforcement agencies in Goa and Arz in combating sex-trafficking and gave the recommendations made by the members of the law enforcement agencies during the source and destination consultation programme.
