Thiruvananthapuram: Even when the prices of essential commodities are spiralling, the government is standing as a mute spectator without interfering in the market, Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said.
In a statement, Chennithala said that the CPM comes up with some eyewash methods in such circumstances, especially during elections. But it should be noted that this time, even that has not happened. The government not intervening in the price rise has derailed the family budget of ordinary people and this amounts to challenging the public, he said.
He said that the prices of almost all items have increased by more than double the previous rate. The promise given by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government was that the prices of essential items in Maveli stores will not increase for the next five years. But the prices are spiralling uncontrollably, he said. The government’s lackadaisical approach in this matter has made things worse.
The state should learn from the present state of affairs in Sri Lanka. The government should immediately intervene and ensure that essential goods are made available at reasonable prices, he said.
