City has witnessed four spells of heatwave conditions so far this year
GURUGRAM: The city’s maximum temperature was recorded at 41.4 degrees Celsius on Monday— two notches above the normal, compared to 43 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while the minimum temperature was 26.5 degree Celsius —three notches above normal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the city is likely to witness a heatwave from May 10 to 13. Gurugram has witnessed four spells of heatwave conditions so far this year.
A “heatwave” is declared when the maximum temperature is over 40 degrees Celsius, and at least 4.5 notches above normal. A “severe heatwave” is declared if the departure from normal temperature is more than 6.4 degrees, according to the IMD.
“Dry northwest winds will prevail in the coming days and another heatwave is likely to begin from May 10. Under its influence, warm weather conditions are likely to prevail over northwest India and adjoining central India,” said an IMD official.
The city’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category on Monday. The overall AQI reading was at 218, compared to 253 a day earlier.
Meanwhile in Delhi, the mercury level dipped at some weather stations compared with a day earlier due to easterly winds blowing in the region under the impact of cyclone Asani. The maximum temperature hovered between 37.5 and 41.4 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The impact of cyclone Asani would likely be visible on Tuesday, but the maximum temperature may soar to 44 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, leading to heatwave conditions at a few places. The maximum temperature may reach 45 degrees Celsius by May 15.
