Colombo, May 09: Sri Lanka's ruling party MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and two others were found dead on Monday after a clash with anti-government protesters outside the capital Colombo, news agency AFP quoted the police, as dozens were wounded in violence elsewhere.
Reportedly, MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala opened fire and critically wounded two people blocking his car in Nittambuwa, and was later found dead after trying to take refuge in a nearby building, officers said.
The people said that gunfire came from his SUV, and when the angry mobs toppled the car, he fled and took refuge in a building and committed suicide by pulling his own revolver. By the time he killed himself, thousands of people had surrounded the building.
Later, the lawmaker and his personal security officer were found dead, the police said. Moreover, a 27-year-old man also died in the shooting, according to the News First website.
Meanwhile, the law-and-order situation went out of hand as properties owned by many other SLPP politicians were attacked following the violent attacks on peaceful protestors in Colombo's 'GotaGoGama' and 'MynaGoGama' protests sites. The offices of former minister Johnston Fernando in Kurunegala and Colombo were attacked by angry crowds.
His taverns were also set on fire. The residence of former minister Nimal Lanza was attacked while Mayor Saman Lal Fernando's residence was set on fire.
The whole country erupted in violence after mobs supporting Mahinda Rajapaksa, who resigned as the Prime Minister, attacked peaceful protesters. The public turned their wrath on the pro-Rajapaksa supporters as they were leaving the capital back home.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on Monday amid unprecedented economic turmoil, hours after his supporters attacked anti-government protesters outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's office, leaving at least 130 people injured and prompting authorities to impose a nationwide curfew and deploy army troops in the capital.
Prime Minister Mahinda, 76, sent his resignation letter to the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after violent scenes were witnessed in Colombo.
"Effective immediately I have tendered my resignation as Prime Minister to the President," Mahinda tweeted.
At least two Cabinet ministers have also announced their resignations. The violence occurred as pressure mounted on the embattled government led by his younger brother and President Gotabaya to form an interim administration to overcome the worst economic crisis facing the country.
Curfew was imposed islandwide with immediate effect until further notice, a police spokesperson was quoted as saying by the local media.
A military contingent was deployed to the protest site to assist law enforcement after clashes between pro-government and protestors at MynaGoGama and GotaGoGama protest sites left around 130 people injured.
