Ranchi: A city-based medical oncologist saved the day for a patient suffering from acute leukemia as he came forward to voluntarily donate blood for him and arranged for his medical treatment under a free government scheme.
Sonat Maraiya, a 22-year-old labourer from Sahebganj, was diagnosed with acute leukemia, a type of blood cancer and had come for treatment at Bhagwan Mahaveer Medica Superspeciality Hospital on April 4. After preliminary screening and diagnosis, Maraiya was diagnosed with leukemia and doctors started blood transfusions on a regular basis. However, on April 18, when the patient needed urgent blood and his wife (Gudiya Maraiya) was unable to arrange it, she approached his treating doctor, Gunjesh Singh, for help.
Dr Singh, in his mid-thirties and O+, readily decided to donate his blood and ensured that his patient’s treatment wasn’t affected.
Talking to TOI, Dr Singh said, “Gudiya walked upto me that evening and started crying as she wasn’t able to get a unit of blood for her husband. She said there is no one to support them in the city and she has to take care of a five-year-old son along with looking after her husband’s requirements. As I was aware that the patient needed blood immediately I went ahead and donated a unit.”
Dr Singh added that as the patient required prolonged treatment, he went ahead and got him enrolled under Mukhyamantri Gambhir Bimari Yojna so that his treatment could be done free of cost. “I have co-ordinated with the authorities and have got them to apply for benefits under the Mukhyamantri healthcare scheme which provides cashless treatment for cancer patients. However, as the approval takes time, I have decided to provide them all support and aren’t charging them for medicine. We are ensuring that maximum discount can be provided to them,” added Dr Singh.
TOI also spoke to Gudiya, wife of the patient, who thanked the doctor for his help and said that he is like a godsend to them. “I didn’t have resources and have a baby to take care of. Not only blood but he (doctor sahab) has been helping us with food and board every now and then.”
