Mangaluru: The
I PU results declared last week, saw a
poor performance from candidates in
Dakshina Kannada. The
arts stream has recorded 74.5%,
commerce 85.3% and
science 94.3% of overall results.
According to colleges and the
PU department, during the pre-pandemic days, the overall results used to be around 95%. However, this time it has dipped significantly. Many candidates have remained absent.
C D Jayanna, DDPU of Dakshina Kannada, told TOI that it is a worrying trend that many students have under performed in this examination, and a majority of them have remained absent. The main reason for this is the Covid-19 pandemic, he said. As a result of not having strict attendance due to the pandemic, many students have not come to college, and have instead joined work. During the examination, principals and senior professors reached out to absentees to appear for the examination. Some did attend, but have not performed well. “With this result, we need to come up with new plans to improve student performance, as well as bring absentees back to the college campus,” he said.
The college heads added, that many students who took admission, did not attend college, as there was leniency for attendance. As a result, students have joined work. “It is not possible to bring them to the college campus again, as they have lost interest in studies,” said a college principal.
Another college principal pointed out, that even those who appeared for examinations have not performed exceptionally. “Some students have hardly written anything in their papers. There are some candidates who have written not more than one or two pages, during the I PU exam. The quality of answers is also worrisome,” the principal said, adding that this is the result of a pandemic, where classes were held online, and students had no chance of learning.
