Mohali: Couple booked for killing man by burning him alive

MOHALI: Mohali police have booked a couple on charges of killing a 33-year-old man by setting him on fire. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Ashraf, who belonged to UP and was living on rent with his companions in Lalru for six months.
According to the police, nephew of the deceased, Jamir said that his maternal uncle Ashraf lived on rent with the accused, Ajay alias John and Arshi, a resident of Lalru. The case was registered on the statement of brother of the deceased, Aslam, a resident of Guru Nanakpura Colony, Lalru Mandi.
Investigating officer, sub-inspector Hardeep Singh said that both the accused are at large and a search is on for them. The deceased, who had been living in Lalru for the last 15 years, is survived by his wife and two children who live in UP.
In his police statement, Aslam said that on the evening of April 26, his younger brother went somewhere without informing him. He said he looked around for him but could not find him. His phone was also switched off. On being questioned, the accused said they had left Ashraf in Zirakpur.
Lalru police station found a burnt body from a secluded place, half of which was missing. When the police called him to identify the body on May 2 afternoon, he went to the spot and saw that the body was of his brother. The body was identified from the purse found on the spot, which was recognised by the nephew and brother of the deceased.
