Ludhiana: Even two days after a major incident in which a car occupant suffered severe injuries when his vehicle was hit by a speeding truck on Southern Bypass near Dugri flyover, the authorities have not done anything to avert such mishaps in the future. Along with over speeding, one of the major reason for this accident was that the car was taking a U-turn from the flyover itself, which is otherwise prohibited under traffic rules. During this incident, Davinder Singh, 45, of Dugri suffered severe injuries and was admitted to the hospital. The car was completely damaged, while the truck was also smashed from the front. The Dugri police have already lodged an FIR in this case against the truck driver, who is absconding.
However, even after two days, the district authorities did not take any preventive measures to stop people taking illegal U-turns from under the flyover.
In the southern bypass, ideally vehicles have to take a U-turn from under the flyovers as there is no crossing for commuters coming from Ferozepur Road and Model Town side to move towards Dugri, Jawaddi and Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar. To save time, many motorists take a shortcut by taking a U-turn from the flyover itself, rather than taking a longer detour for the turn. Though the traffic police have installed PVC traffic cones at the spot to stop people from doing so, it seems such temporary measures have little impact.
In addition, being a bypass, vehicles tend to overspeed on the road and thus accidents are often reported on the stretch. Several people have died in road accidents on this bypass, but it seems the traffic police is unable to provide a solution to this issue.
Previous accidents on bypass
On May 18, 2021, a speeding truck hit an elderly man Mohan Singh, 60, of village Daba to death on Southern bypass. The incident has also been captured in a CCTV installed near the spot, which captured that at first the truck hit the bike-borne elderly man and when he fell down, the vehicle crushed him to death.
In November 2021, a head-on collision of two trucks was reported on the bypass, and one truck driver named Surjit Singh of village Deenewal died, while another sustained injuries. The incident occurred in the early hours, and official stated that the accident occurred when one truck driver was trying to avoid a pothole.
