Coimbatore: Members of the Muslim community celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with pomp and gaiety across the district on Tuesday after two years of living under strict Covid-19 restrictions.
It was decided to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday as the month of Shawwal began on Monday evening, general secretary of Coimbatore District All Jamaat Haji M I Mohammed Ali said.
Members of the community offered prayers at more than 300 mosques and grounds, and shared greetings. They shared food with the less fortunate, before they began prayers between 7.30am and 10am.
More than 10,000 people attended the mass prayer at Masjidhul Hudha mosque at Karumbukadai, sources said. Large crowds also thronged mosques at Adithya Garden in Kuniyamuthur, Peelamedu, Agri University and Rathinapuri.
Mohammed Sadakkadullah, a resident of Vilankurichi, expressed the joy of attending mass prayers after two years. “The celebration gave relief from the agonies caused by the pandemic. I feel light and wonderful after a month of fasting. We prepared biryani and shared it with sweets with friends and relatives,” he told TOI.
City hotels offered special Ramzan combos to attract customers on the day.
