Silchar: A Myanmar national, who belonged to the Rohingya community, was arrested from a train at New Haflong station in Assam’s Dima Hasao district after he was found travelling without valid documents.
Railway Protection Force (RPF) sources on Tuesday said the 30-year-old man was held on Sunday from a Bhopal-bound train in the hill station and preliminary investigation revealed that the Myanmar national has suspected links with Pakistani terror groups in terms of financial transactions.
Sources in the Northeast Frontier Railway said the man, Noorul Amin alias Amin, boarded the Agartala-Rani Kamlapati special train from Badarpur railway station in south Assam on Sunday for Rani Kamlapati station in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. When the train was about to reach New Haflong station in the Dima Hasao district, two travelling ticket examiners (TTEs) checked Noorul’s ticket and asked him to show identity proof. Accordingly, Noorul showed him a document that revealed he was a native of Myanmar. The TTEs, whose identities have been kept secret for security purposes, then asked him to show some documents to prove that he was travelling in India legally. Noorul, however, could not show any such document after which the TTEs contacted Railway Protection Force (RPF). After the train reached New Haflong station, the RPF took him in custody, sources said.
The RPF quizzed him and later handed him over to the Government Railway Police (GRP), New Haflong station. He is being grilled by the GRP.
A probe by railway police has indicated that he has links with Pakistan-based organisations in terms of financial transactions.
Earlier on April 22, two Ukrainian nationals , who were travelling in Agartala-New Delhi (Anand Vihar) Tripura Sundari Express with invalid passports were detained by railway police in Assam’s Karimganj district.
