AIZAWL: At least 300 dwelling houses and church buildings were damaged by the hailstorm and heavy rain across
Mizoram since Saturday evening, state disaster management and
rehabilitation department officials said on Monday.
No human casualties have been reported so far.
Heavy downpours, accompanied by strong winds and hailstorm on Saturday evening damaged at least 237 houses in northeastern
Saitual district, of which 71 houses were completely destroyed.
Detailed reports from other nearby villages were awaited, the officials said.
Phuaibuang villagers said the hail that hit the village, inhabited by around 500 families, were as big as the size of eggs and caused severe damage to the tin-roofed houses. At least 70 families have been evacuated to safer places as their houses were not habitable after the hailstorm.
The hailstorm, accompanied by strong winds also destroyed around 60 dwelling houses in Mamit district on the Mizoram-Tripura-Bangladesh border, of which 13 houses were rendered unsuitable for living.
The strong winds uprooted a tree that in turn snapped an electric transmission line feeding Mamit town rendering the district headquarters powerless for hours. The hailstorm and strong winds also left a trail of destruction in a large area of areca nut plantation at Khantlang village in Mamit district.
District administration officials have provided immediate relief to the victims.
