Parliamentary panel visits Sakkarbaug Zoo

Rajkot: The parliamentary standing committee on forests, environment and technology visited Sakkarbaug zoo in Junagadh on Tuesday.
The committee members included Jairam Ramesh, Parimal Nathwani, Sakshi Maharaj, Vandana Chavan, Nabam Rebia, Rajani Patil, Sudarshan Bhagat, Jayanta Kumar Roy and others.
The parliamentarians were informed about the various animals and bird species in the zoo which was established in 1863 and is spread across 84 hectares. One of the major attractions of the zoo is its Asiatic lion population there. The zoo also runs the only captive breeding centre for Asiatic lions in the world.
The parliamentarians had a meeting with zoo superintendent Abhishek Kumar who informed them about the hi-tech hospital and laboratory for animals.
According to zoo authorities, the panel was on a study tour. The lawmakers were also briefed about the conservation efforts of various endangered species at the Sakkarbaug zoo.
