17-year-old student thrashed in Tamil Nadu government student for wearing Kalava, dies

One of the three accused was a Dalit and the other two are from a minority community.

In a horrifying incident, a 17-year-old student was thrashed in a government school in Tamil Nadu for wearing a caste wrist band, Kalava. Reports said that the student was beaten up by 3 Class XI students, who were his classmate.

The victim has been identified as M Selva Surya who hailed from the Tirunelveli district and belonged to the most backward class. One of the three accused was a Dalit and the other two are from a minority community.

As per a report in The Times Of India, the student was taken to Tirunelveli medical college where he underwent surgery and died two days after that. The incident took place in Pallakkaal Pothukkudi government higher secondary school and the accused have been arrested by the police.

Reports also said that Surya was hit with a brick that caused severe injuries to his head and an ear. According to the police, the victim asked his Dalit classmate why he wore a caste band, however, he himself wore a Kalava. The argument turned into a fight and one of the accused hit Surya with a hollow brick near the left ear.

Selva Surya was then provided with the first aid at school. However, due to the unbearable pain in his head, he was rushed to the hospital later that night. According to the doctors, he suffered a blood clot following which he underwent surgery. His condition deteriorated and he passed away on Saturday morning.

For the past few months, several cases of caste and religion-based violence have erupted across the nation.
