Mangaluru: Animal rescuer Tauseef Ahmed has rescued an Alexandrine Parakeet whose wings were clipped, at Kavoor on Sunday.
Tauseef, founder, Mr Rescuer, told TOI that he received a call on Sunday morning after a person noticed a cat pouncing on the parrot.
“I rushed to the spot and realised that the bird was not able to fly because its wings were clipped. It was probably a pet in someone’s house and had escaped. Wing clipping is the process of trimming a bird’s primary wing feathers or remiges so that it is not fully flight-capable, until it moults, sheds the cut feathers and grows new ones,” he said.
“Unfortunately, in this case, it seems that the wings were clipped using ordinary scissors and not done professionally,” he added.
Soon after the rescue, the bird was examined by Dr Harish of Little Paws Clinic and later shifted to Animal Care Trust for better treatment. It will take another four to six months for complete recovery.
Keeping Indian Parakeets at home is an offence under the Wildlife Act, Tauseef said.
Alexandrine Parakeets are relatively popular pet birds due to their long lifespan in captivity, playful behaviour and ability to mimic human speech.
