18-year-old Hasandeep Kaur from Punjab village draws attention for singing western songs
Kaur fondly sings 'Bella Ciao'
BATHINDA: An 18-year-old girl from a village in Punjab has garnered attention for singing many famous songs by widely acclaimed artists.
Be it English singer Dua Lipa's 'No lie', 'Love me like you do' by Ellie Goulding, 'August diaries' by Dharia, Spanish 'Despacito' by Luis Fonsi and Italian protest folk song 'Bella Ciao', most of the teenagers from rural backgrounds might not have even heard about these songs, let alone sung these.
But believe it or not, these Spanish, Italian and English songs are sung perfectly by Hasandeep Kaur. After having born in semi literate family, it might sound absurd but Kaur has such qualities.
Studying in BSc non medical at Muktsar, Kaur fondly sings Bella Ciao, the very popular Italian protest folk song. She sings Spanish and English songs with equal ease in melodious voice and with expressions on her innocent face. She learned all this through You Tube.
Coming from a humble background, the teenager had started taking interest in music while studying in standard V. She learned the intricacies by spending hours on You Tube and Google. Even not knowing the exact lyrics and name of the singer, she used to get some words and look for the complete song on the You Tube. She would then put the song into Google translator for getting them in Punjabi and used to minutely watch the way the song was being sung and try to copy that. She kept on practising this for years. It was only when she was in standard XI that she started singing the way these were being sung, though she could not get the real accent.
On her first day of college, she sang for the first time infront of the entire class and after that, her fellow mates started calling her 'Bella Ciao'.
Her family is making both ends meet from a small grocery shop being run by her father in the village and the five family members including her parents and elder brother make up from the small earning.
"After getting back from college, I practice the songs and keep on listening these at our small home. I deeply get involved in the song, to learn every detail and then copy it while singing. Though I learned a lot from Google and You Tube but certain things are god gifted", said Kaur.
Her elder brother Satnam Singh, an MBA degree holder from Malout, now wants to prepare for the civil services. My mother is a 5th pass and my father studied only till standard 10 but both of them want me pursue singing after completing my studies, she added.
"Though many in my college or even in the village might not like me singing western songs but I get a lot of support from my family", she further said.
