PANAJI: Joblessness in Goa has increased over the past three months and stood at 15.5% in April, up from the 11.6% unemployment rate in January, monthly data published by the Centre for Monitoring of Indian Economy (CMIE) showed.
The data from the independent think-tank reveals that the prevalence of
unemployment in Goa is higher than the
national average.
The independent research firm pegged the country’s unemployment at 7.8% in April from 7.6% in March.
Appropriately, 9 lakh of Goa’s population is in the employable age bracket of 20-59, which would suggest that around 1.4 lakh Goans remain unemployed.
In the month of April, unemployment was highest in Haryana, followed by Rajasthan and Bihar, CMIE data showed. Goa takes the fifth position in the unemployment rankings, just one basis point behind Jammu & Kashmir.
One of the main reasons for unemployment in Goa is the inability to attract new industrial units to the state.
Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Assam saw the lowest unemployment rate which stood at a miniscule 0.2%, 0.6% and 1.2% respectively.
Minister for information and technology Rohan Khaunte and labour minister Atanasio Monserrate have expressed concern about Goa’s unemployed youth on earlier occasions.
