AURANGABAD: The district civil surgeon of Jalna, along with the local police, raided a private clinic and busted an alleged illegal abortion centre operating from there.
The raid had been carried out on the directions of the state health and family welfare department, said Jalna civil surgeon Dr Archana Bhosale.
Based on her complaint, the Chandanzira police in Jalna town have registered a case against eight suspects.
The police have already arrested three suspects. The key suspect, however, managed to flee with the sonography machine just minutes ahead of the raid.
The suspects have been booked under 10 different sections of the IPC, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act and the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
The raid was carried out around 12.30 am on Saturday.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Sandeep, alias Raju Pawar; Sunita Sasane and Kaushalya Magre.
The team has seized articles, including three MTP kits, one used MTP kit and other articles that were allegedly used for carrying out the illegal abortions.
Police said that a dummy patient was sent to the clinic to perform MTP and the suspects gave her an appointment for Friday night.
It was after repeated calls made to the suspect doctor went unanswered, that the team directly raided the hospital post mid night.
Police said multiple teams have been fanned out to nab the suspect doctor.
