Tirupur: The district police on Saturday imposed provisions of the Goondas Act against two men who were arrested in connection with a kidnapping and extortion case.
Edward, 55, and Sekar, 42, both from Erode, were booked under the act as per an order served by district collector S Vineeth on Saturday.
On March 7 night, the accused waylaid Kannan, 52, while he was on his way to Namakkal on his bike. Kannan, a native of Namakkal, owns a godown at Sengapalli in Tirupur district. “They pulled him inside a car and demanded money from him to let him go. They released Kannan after he paid the money,” a police officer said.
Kannan filed a complaint with the Uthukuli police about the incident the next day. Police registered a case against two unidentified suspects under Section 364A (kidnapping for ransom) of the Indian penal code, and started an inquiry.
Police identified the suspects and arrested them on April 4. Police also seized an SUV from them. They were lodged in prison after being produced before a judicial magistrate.
