Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen is eyeing Jubilee Hills and Musheerabad assembly constituencies for the 2023 elections. These two assembly segments are located outside the Old City and are presently represented by its friendly party, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
AIMIM had contested Jubilee Hills in 2014 elections and was runners up leaving Congress and TRS in second and third positions respectively. TDP had won the seat then. However, Owaisi’s party did not contest Jubilee Hills in 2018 polls and supported TRS.
The party had been winning one or two municipal divisions in the Musheerabad assembly constituency, which has a sizable minority population. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM had won seven of the eight seats it contested in the Telangana assembly polls in 2018, retaining its hold in its traditional bastion of the Old City. All the seven sitting MLAs, including Asaduddin’s brother Akbaruddin Owaisi, were re-elected.
Recently, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi held a meeting with party MLAs, corporators and important leaders from GHMC area and other major towns in Telangana. A senior leader told TOI that Owaisi Sr had has asked the elected representatives and party workers to work actively in the constituencies of Jubilee Hills and Musheerabad too.
“Though the party leadership will take a final decision later on how many constituencies AIMIM will contest, he (Asaduddin) told the party leaders to work beyond the Old City. He also directed the party leaders not to relax but start work as AIMIM should be ready for polls, whether they are conducted as per schedule in November/December 2023 or early,” a senior leader said. AIMIM had contested Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency in 2014 and secured third place with TRS in fourth place. BJP had won the seat with Congress being the runner up. Both Jubilee Hills and Musheerabad are part of this parliamentary constituency.
