GURUGRAM: Days after phase-1 work began to improve traffic junctions in the city, it has been decided that the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will coordinate with the traffic police on the project to carry out renovations.

Officials said the directions were given by GMDA chief executive officer (CEO) Sudhir Rajpal during the meeting of the authority’s Core Planning Cell (CPC) on Tuesday.
“The CEO directed officials to coordinate with traffic police while executing the project. He directed that inputs of traffic police be sought regarding the improvement of intersections,” a senior GMDA official familiar with the matter said on Sunday.
“The CEO also said that it must be ensured there is no lack of coordination between the traffic police and the mobility division of the GMDA to ensure the project serves its purpose of easing traffic movement,” the official quoted above said.
The GMDA has a target of improving 106 junctions as part of this project. This will include making pedestrian and zebra crossings, installing cat’s eyes, erecting delineator posts, signages, and bollards, and making road markings with thermoplastic paint.
Work for phase 1 of the project, in which 40 junctions will be improved, began last week. Estimates for the scope of work for the remaining 66 junctions are pending.
The junctions being improved in the first phase include Sikanderpur Metro Chowk, Genpact Chowk, AIT Chowk, Bristol Chowk, Khushboo Chowk, Wazirabad Chowk, Artemis Chowk, Bakhtawar Chowk, Rezang La Chowk, Ghata mod, Mor Chowk, and Hero Honda Chowk. Work on them is expected to take around four-and-a-half months to complete.
The project was first proposed in July last year and the tender for phase 1 floated in October.
In Tuesday’s CPC meeting, the CEO also asked officials to take pictures of the intersections before and after the improvements to upload these on the GMDA website for public observation.
He said the slipways at the intersections must be bettered, and the “total development or improvement” of the junctions be kept in mind.
The GMDA has lately focused on better coordination with the traffic police for its mobility projects.
