Ludhiana: The Supreme Court’s decision to accommodate Indian medical students from Ukraine in local hospitals is being lauded by students in Ludhiana, who have been asking government hospitals to allow them to do clinical observation. They said for nearly two months since their return, they could study online only.
On Sunday, they requested again the directorate of medical education and research to allow them for clinical observation. Students have demanded that the state should accommodate them, as there was no telling when the war would come to an end and when Ukraine will be able to rebuild its infrastructure.
Gurleen, who was pursuing her third year in Kharkiv National Medical University, said “We are trying to reach Prime Minister to seek help about accommodation of Ukraine students in Indian colleges with fee structure similar to Ukraine. Parents all over India have made associations and started signature campaigns. However, there is no support from the government yet and we are not allowed to see as an observer in nearby hospitals."
Stating that in West Bengal, officials have even given seats to students, students from Ludhiana said here no hospital is allowing them to even observe the patients.
“We went to civil hospital to request them to allow us to observe the clinical practice and staff said to take permission from the civil surgeon office. On Friday, we went to the civil surgeon office and requested him to allow us the observation in civil hospital. We were there for three hours requesting them,” added Gurleen.
Another student, Jahanvi Khurana, studying in the third year of Kharkiv University, said, “I am not satisfied with online classes that have been going on for the last few weeks due to poor connection, we are not able to understand properly. Our pharmacology class has never been conducted. Now, we only want clinical practice and we even have letter from our college, but even after that we are not allowed. So, we are not getting clinical exposure. With no decision from central and state, our future is in doldrums.”
Civil surgeon S PSingh said, “No one has reported to me yet and it has to be done under the directions from state authority and director health services.”
G B Singh, director of health services, said for clarification, director of medical education and research, Avnish Kumar should be contacted.
Avnish Kumar said, “I have not received any proposal from students, when we get it we will look intoit.”
