Coimbatore: The Perur all-woman Police on Sunday arrested a retired airman of the Indian Air Force for sexually abusing a minor girl near Sulur.
Police said the victim was living with her relatives in a house rented out by the accused. He was living alone in a separate portion of the building as his wife separated from him.
The girl informed about the incident to her teacher in the school, who in turn called Childline and alerted officials.
The Coimbatore district child welfare committee took up the issue and conducted an inquiry. The committee lodged a complaint with the Perur all-woman police on Saturday. Based on the complaint, a case was registered under sections 7 and 8 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
Police arrested the retired airman and lodged him in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
Police said that the victim’s parents were living elsewhere. “We have a suspicion that the child could have been adopted illegally. It is also under investigation. If we find any evidence to corroborate the suspicion, further course of action would be taken,” police said.
