Forthcoming EVs spied and well-known international model lines go electric

As carmakers prepare for launches and unveils in early May, the last seven days have been relatively slow on new car launches. Nevertheless, it was hardly uneventful, and we brought you several exclusive stories, spy shots and news about upcoming ICE and electric vehicles (EVs).

For all the important updates you might have missed on last week, here’s our wrap-up for this weekend:

Tata Avinya Unveiled:

Previously at the Curvv’s unveiling, Tata told us that its future electric cars will be based on a new Generation 3 dedicated EV platform. This is it – the Avinya has been unveiled as the first Gen 3 platform vehicle, and it previews various other future technologies such as a voice-based cabin interface and driver assistance features. Find out all about the Avinya crossover concept vehicle in our detailed story.

BMW i4 Unveiled In India:

Electric BMWs are coming fast, and the new i4 electric sedan is the latest zero-emissions entrant from the Bavarian carmaker. It’s essentially an all-electric 4 Series that’ll be offered with a 344PS electric motor and rear-wheel-drive layout as standard. It doesn’t have any direct electric sedan rivals yet, but in the future it’ll face off against the Tesla Model 3 in our market.

Skoda Kushaq Ambition Classic Launched, Monte Carlo To Follow:

Czech carmaker Skoda has introduced a new second-from-base Kushaq variant that gets you most of the features of the Ambition trim at a slightly more affordable price. The Ambition Classic has suede interior upholstery and a contrast black roof (white roof if you opt for the Carbon Steel Grey paint shade). We also spied the Kushaq’s next major update, the upcoming top-spec Monte Carlo variant.

Long-range Tata Nexon EV Gets A Launch Date:

The 2022 update will bring key powertrain improvements to the Nexon EV. We finally know that the EV will break cover in early May with a more powerful 136PS electric motor and a larger battery pack. The bump in range is likely to be accompanied by a hike in price, too, but we expect Tata will include new features and creature comforts to better justify the price increase. Find out all about the upcoming EV from our exclusive Tata Nexon EV spy story

Tata Altroz EV Spied:

After the updated Nexon EV goes on sale, the Altroz EV is expected to be the next all-electric launch from Tata. A heavily camouflaged mule of the electric hatchback has been spied testing on our roads. It’ll use a similar Ziptron electric powertrain as the Nexon EV and Tigor EV, and you can find out more about its redesigned interior in our Altroz EV unveiling story here

Honda City Hybrid Gets A Launch Date:

The Honda City e:HEV will go on sale in May as the first mass-market strong hybrid in India. It’s powered by a self-charging hybrid system and an ultra-efficient Atkinson cycle 1.5-litre petrol engine. It’s expected to command a hefty premium over the ICE City, but it’ll also come with significantly better safety features and driver assistance systems.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Rolls Off The Production Line:

The W206 Mercedes C-Class is another launch due in early May, and the first locally produced unit has rolled off the line from Mercedes's Chakan plant. The new C-Class looks sharp with its neat body lines, and it’s longer and a bit wider than before. You’ll surely be blown away by its new interior that looks modern, classy and several notches more upmarket than its predecessor. Later on, it’s likely to get a more powerful C 43 variant that was globally revealed last week.

International Update:

GM announced that the iconic Chevrolet Corvette will get an electric powertrain in the future, although its next iteration will be a hybrid. Aston Martin, too, told us it’ll electrify its lineup for 2030. In other news, the next-generation Range Rover Sport is set to break cover in May with important aesthetic, interior and powertrain updates.
