Delhi Live News: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today said that the heat wave condition in the National capital may abate from tomorrow. In its forecast, the Met department predicted heatwave conditions in regions including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, south UP, Kutch, and East Rajasthan today and said it is likely to abate from Monday.

Meanwhile, the number of fresh Covid-19 cases in Delhi remained above the 1,500-mark for two consecutive days, with 1,520 cases being recorded Saturday. Not just the absolute number of cases, the positivity rate — proportion of samples tested that return positive — also remained over the 5% mark for the two days, even with around 30,000 tests. The positivity rate, which is indicative of the spread of infection in the community, stood at 5.10% on Saturday with 29,775 tests having been conducted, as per the bulletin.

In another news, four unidentified men allegedly broke into a robbed her jewellery worth Rs 4 crore at knife point, and tied her legs before fleeing, said police on Saturday. No arrests have been made yet. In other news, the Delhi government Saturday provided Covid relief assistance of Rs 1 crore to families of four frontline workers who lost their lives during the pandemic. So far, families of around 34 frontline workers have received the ex-gratia assistance, said officials.

77-year-old robbed, murdered at his home in North Delhi’s Civil Lines

A 77-year-old man was allegedly robbed and murdered by unidentified men inside his house in North Delhi’s Civil Lines, the police said. The victim was sleeping alone when the accused broke into his house, robbed cash from the room and attacked him with a weapon, they added.

Officers identified the deceased as Ram Kishore Agrawal. The police said they received a PCR call around 6.52 am Sunday about the murder. “The victim’s son called us and said he found his father lying injured in the bed around 6.40 am. His neck was slit. He was rushed to Sushrut Trauma Centre where the doctors declared him dead. We found that he had four knife injuries on his body,” Sagar Singh Kalsi, DCP (North) said. Read More

Vijay Goel leads cleanliness drive around Delhi Jama Masjid ahead of Eid

Former BJP MP from Chandni Chowk Vijay Goel on Sunday led a cleanliness drive around the Jama Masjid ahead of Eid. Giving the slogan "Swachhata Se Sadbhavna" (harmony through cleanliness), Goel said cleanliness is necessary before festivals, including Eid.     

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas', he said, "Everyone is participating in this cleanliness drive." Goel, the vice chairman of the Gandhi Smriti Evam Darshan Samiti, represented Chandni Chowk twice in Lok Sabha. Out for evening walk, five students hit by vehicle in Greater Noida, one dead

A student died and four others were injured after a vehicle ran over them in Greater Noida Saturday night. According to the police, all five were students of Galgotias University in Greater Noida, and they were taking a stroll after dinner when the vehicle crushed them and fled from the spot at the Ryan roundabout in the Beta 2 area. According to the police, the deceased was identified as Ayush Sharma (23) and the injured as Anjali, Isha, Aditya and Vaishnavi.

“We received information that some pedestrians were mowed down by a vehicle. They were rushed to the Kailash hospital where one student died during treatment. Others are receiving medical attention. A case has been filed and we are ascertaining details about the vehicle,” said an official from the Beta 2 police station.

Three killed as car collides with motorbike in East Delhi’s Vikas Marg

Three persons died and two others sustained injuries after a car collided with a motorbike in East Delhi’s Vikas Marg in the early hours of Sunday, the police said. The car turned turtle following the collision, trapping its occupants, officers added. Two of the deceased have been identified by the police as sisters Jyoti (17) and Bharti (19) who were inside the car, while the third victim is the motorbike rider who is yet to be identified.

According to the police, they received a PCR call about the accident around 1 am from Vikas Marg in Shakurpur. The officers reached the spot and found a damaged motorbike and a WagonR car. Locals rushed the bike rider to the hospital, but the car’s occupants were trapped.

Delhi govt seeks suggestions from traders to select and redevelop five iconic markets

To select and redevelop five iconic markets in a phased manner, the Delhi government has invited suggestions and applications from traders and market associations. Traders have been asked to fill online forms and give suggestions about unique products, street foods or any other items that make their market iconic and eligible to be selected among the top five markets in Delhi for redevelopment.

“Under the Rozgar Budget 2022-23, (the) Delhi government will redevelop 5 selected markets from all over Delhi in phase-1. If you are a part of any historic and reputed market of Delhi and want your market to be selected in the first phase, please send your suggestions to the Delhi government via your market association,” read the invite by the government. Delhi weather today: Heatwave will linger, mercury to hit 43 degrees Celsius

Heatwave conditions and a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius are on the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast for Delhi on Sunday. For the third day in a row, the maximum temperature at the Safdarjung weather observatory was 43.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday, five degrees above the normal for this time of the year.

The CWG Sports Complex in East Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 47.1 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the highest for any weather station in the national capital. The maximum temperature at Gurgaon stood at a slightly lower figure of 46.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature recorded early on Sunday was 25.8 degrees Celsius, a degree above the normal. How Shanti Niketan and Vasant Vihar came up for retd central govt officers

In the mid-1950s when Padma Chib (85) reached Japan with her husband after a 26-day journey on the ship from Calcutta, she received a letter from her father-in-law who was in Chandigarh at that time, informing them about a central government servants’ cooperative housing society being formed in Delhi. Her husband, Ashok Sen Chib, was in the foreign services at the time and was, therefore, eligible to apply for membership to the society, which would entitle him to a plot of land close to Shanti Path.

“We were too young at that time and buying a piece of land was not in our priorities at all. But we thought it was a good idea to invest for the family to settle in the future,” recollected Chib. Her husband immediately filled up the form and sent it back to India. Thereafter, her father-in-law made the initial payments for buying the land on what became Shanti Niketan, where her home stands today.

Gurgaon: Pvt bank staffer dies after bus hits motorcycle

A 32-year-old private bank employee was killed while his colleague suffered injuries after a Haryana roadways bus allegedly hit their motorcycle in Gurgaon on Friday. Police said the accused bus driver was arrested and later released on bail. According to police, the incident took place around 12 pm when the victim, Tekchand Saini, and his colleague Lal Mohan, both private bank staffers, were going to a bank in Bilaspur for some work. Part of ceiling collapses at KMC, injured professor demands structural audit

A part of the ceiling fell on the head of a professor at Kirori Mal College Friday. Geography professor Seema Parihar, who sustained bruises on her head and arm, said a structural audit of the college buildings was needed. Parihar was in her research room inside the Geography lab when the incident occurred around 1 pm. “I was working on my laptop when part of the roof fell on my head. I was covered in rubble to my knees. My colleagues who were outside the lab immediately came and helped. I’m very thankful that it happened on a day when others were there since practical exams were on. Otherwise, I’m alone in the room,” she said, adding that her laptop was also damaged. Read more

Kabaddi player wanted murder cases arrested

A 22-year-old national-level kabaddi player from Haryana, wanted in several cases of murder, attempt to murder and robbery, has been arrested, police said on Saturday. The accused Dinesh alias Dhillu is a resident of Haryana's Sonipat district and has represented the state in various kabaddi tournaments, they said, adding that he is an associate of gangsters Kaushal, Monu Lalheri and Naveen Bali.     

On Thursday, police got a tip-off and apprehended him from a place between Hiran Kudna and Dichaon villages here. A sophisticated pistol and four live rounds were recovered from his possession, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Rajiv Ranjan said. Last November, Dinesh had allegedly killed his wife by stabbing her several times suspecting her of infidelity. Following this, the Haryana Police had announced a reward of Rs 5,000 on him, they said. (PTI)

Delhi: SDMC steps up Covid preparedness, to provide month’s medicines to chronic disease patients

With the uptick in the number of Covid-19 cases in the national capital, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has stepped up its preparedness to control the spread of the virus. The civic agency has set up separate registration counters, waiting rooms, queues for medical consultations, dedicated lab testing facilities, and counters for free distribution of medicines for suspected Covid-19 patients besides making people aware in its health centres.

“All SDMC hospitals and health centres have been asked to make proper arrangement of signages at premises of hospitals and health units. All medical officers, in-charges have been asked to ensure that health care staff health care workers could follow Covid related guidelines and norms,” said a senior South MCD official. Read more

Four men break into elderly woman’s home in Delhi’s Anand Lok, tie her up, flee with jewellery worth Rs 4 crore

Four unidentified men allegedly broke into a  robbed her jewellery worth Rs 4 crore at knife point, and tied her legs before fleeing, said police on Saturday.

The incident took place around 3.30 am on Saturday. DCP (South) Benita Mary Jaiker said, “We received a PCR call in the morning from a house in Anand Lok, Defence Colony. The complainant, Ritika (68), said she and her five-year-old granddaughter were sleeping on the ground floor while her children and other family members were on the first floor. Around 3.30 am, she found four persons in her room. They were looking for her almirah. When they saw she was awake, they asked her to keep quiet.”

With Covid cases rising, SDMC to provide 1-month advance medicines to chronic disease patients

With coronavirus cases rising steadily, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to provide one month's advance medicines to non-Covid patients visiting its health facilities with chronic diseases, officials said Saturday. "If they get medicines in advance, they will not have to go to hospitals owing to which there will be less chances of Covid infection in them," a senior official said.

The officials also said the civic agency has made elaborate arrangements at its hospitals and health centres for Covid patients including setting up separate registration counters, waiting rooms, queues, dedicated lab testing facilities.

The officials said an order in this regard has also been issued by the civic body. "Senior citizens visiting our health units should be attended on priority as they are most vulnerable group of people. Non-Covid patients especially suffering from chronic ailments, visiting SDMC hospitals and dispensaries, should be issued at least one month medicines," the SDMC said. (PTI)

The Delhi government Saturday provided Covid relief assistance of Rs 1 crore to families of four frontline workers who lost their lives during the pandemic. So far, families of around 34 frontline workers have received the ex-gratia assistance, said officials.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia met the family of Dr Aabha Bhandari, who worked as a senior medical officer at the Delhi government dispensary on Chamelian Road and died of the virus. Handing over the cheque, Sisodia said, “The Delhi government will never forget Dr Bhandari’s sacrifice and will always support her family.” Read More

Jahangirpuri violence: Court directs police to provide FIR copies to 2 accused

A court on Saturday directed Delhi Police to hand over copies of the FIR and certain other documents to two accused in a case related to Jahangirpuri violence here.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepika Singh passed the order on a plea moved by both the accused - Zafar and Babuddin - but said the FIR should not be made public and its content should not be posted on social media.

The court also extended the judicial custody of both of them till 13 May after they were produced before it through video conferencing. The accused told the court that police was not supplying them the copies of the FIR and remand applications, which was required for preparing the defence in the case, and it was their fundamental right.
