Noida: Around 1,000 residents of Spring Meadows in Greater Noida West were without adequate water for nine hours beginning Thursday afternoon, as temperatures in Delhi-NCR exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in an ongoing heatwave.
Initially, there was low-pressure water supply that worsened by the evening, eventually depleting the stored water stocks in the society’s underground tank, they alleged. The tank of the society has a total capacity to store 6 lakh litres of water. Out of this, 2 lakh litres are reserved mandatory for fire safety measures and the remaining for domestic consumption. Daily chores were disrupted, and there was little water to go around for cooking and drinking, they added.
“We had to buy drinking water as the purifiers installed at home remained non-functional in the absence of supply. Whatever little water was stored was consumed during the 9 hours when supply did not refill the underground tanks,” said
Sheetal Dhanotia, a resident.
“Till 10:30 in the night, we were unable to cook as there was no water in the society,” added Avinash Verma, also a resident. Another homeowner pointed to the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (
GNIDA) for supply-side issues. “The issue of supply was from the Greater Noida Authority's side as there was less supply that led to the shortage. After continuous follow-up all day, the supply could start only late at night,” said
Vikash Katiyar, a resident of the apartment complex that has 9 towers hosting around 1,296 flats.
GNIDA officials said the problem may have been in the society, with an increase in consumption one of the possibilities. By Friday evening, officials said they had replenished the supply with a promise to provide tankers if needed.
“We have been giving adequate water supply to the society, including the neighbouring apartment complex. By Friday, we had replenished the shortfall and checked that even after consumption in the morning, there was about 70% supply water left in their UGR,” said
Kapil Dev Singh, senior manager, GNIDA.
He added that water tankers can be provided if the society’s residents face any further problems.
