Benchmark NSE Nifty closed 220.65 points down at 17171.95 amid selling in frontline bluechip counters.
However, stocks such as Birla Tyres, Akash Infra-Proj, Roto Pumps, OrissaBengalCarrier and Indiabulls Intgrtd, touched their fresh 52-week lows.
Overall, 8 shares ended in the green in Nifty50 index, while 42 closed in the red.
In the Nifty 50 index, Adani Ports SEZ, M&M, Bharti Airtel, Maruti Suzuki and ITC were among top gainers during the day, while Hindalco, HUL, Cipla, SBI and IndusInd Bank ended in the red.
The BSE Sensex closed 714.53 points down at 57197.15.
Traders piled up positions in Rubber, Cables, Sugar, Telecommunications and Shipping sectors, while selling was witnessed in Tourism & Hospitality, Agro Processing, Tyres, Metals - Non Ferrous and Banks sectors during the day.
