Covid19 Pandemic April 18 Updates: In a worrying sign, India’s daily case count shot up by 90 per cent on Monday as country reported 2,183 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours. This comes on the back of steady uptick in the weekly case count. Reports from various states suggest that India’s weekly case count has gone up 35 per cent. Another cause of concern was the sharp increase in the fatalities. Monday’s tally shows 214 Covid deaths in the span of one day. In state such as Uttar Pradesh, there has been a consistent surge in daily cases. UP has registered over 100 cases for three days in running in last one week. In neighbouring Delhi, the spike is very prominent. The updated data from the health department shows that Delhi detected 517 cases on Sunday.
In China, situation remain grim with Shanghai reporting first Covid deaths since the 2022 lockdown began. As many as three unvaccinated individuals died due to coronavirus-related complications, a PTI report said. Of the total 2,723 new infections reported on Sunday, Shanghai alone accounted for 2,417 infections, the updates from China say. While the symptomatic cases remain relatively low, the asymptotic infections are nearing 20,000-mark. Shanghai registered 19,831 local-transmitted infections on Sunday.
