The police in Canada’s Toronto have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of an Indian student last week. According to Toronto officials, the accused has been identified as Richard Jonathan Edwin who carried out another murder after killing Kartik Vasudev.
On Thursday, at approximately 5 pm, Toronto Police Service received multiple calls about a shooting at the Sherbourne Subway Station. Kartik Vasudev, 21, was found outside the Glen Road entrance with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he died as a result of his injuries, said the police.
Kartik, a management student from Ghaziabad, was travelling to work at a restaurant in the Downtown area at the time of the incident. Investigators said Edwin discharged a handgun shooting the victim multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Edwin shot another person on Saturday, according to the police. At approximately 7 pm, the accused approached the second victim, Elijah Eleazar Mahepath, 35, who was walking on Dundas Street East near George Street. The accused shot multiple rounds striking the victim and fled the scene, the police added.
“These murders are believed to be random attacks and the victims were not known to the accused or each other. Investigators are working to establish the full motive behind the attacks and these remain active investigations,” said Toronto Police in a statement.
The family of Kartik Vasudev believe there is a comprehensive investigation due in the case. “It seems unlikely that these were just random crimes as police is saying. The man murdered two people in a span of two days. There has to be a motive or a target and it does not come across as random. I hope there is further investigation into the case and it is not dismissed at this point,” said Jitesh Vasudev, Kartik’s father.
