Indra Nooyi, former PepsiCo CEO, recently threw light on the importance of paid leaves during an interview. While talking about the why paid leaves should be a norm at workplaces, Nooyi said that she worries about those who do not have the system of paid leave in their place of work.
The Indian-American shared her own experience when she was on paid leave for three months after her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Nooyi was working at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) when she was offered paid leave by her workplace so she could care for him.
"The single most valuable benefit I received in my early career was paid leave. After my father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, BCG offered me six months off - with pay - so I could care for him," Nooyi shared on her official LinkedIn account.
Further in her post, Nooyi reveals that she would have had to quit her job if paid leave was not an option as her family was her first priority.
"If the first paid leave at BCG when my father was diagnosed with cancer was not given to me, I don’t know what the trajectory of my life would have been because I would have had to quit the job because my family came before everything else and I was going to take care of my father," Nooyi says in a video conversation with PBS.
She further reveals that she was back at work within three months and two days after her father passed away.
“And even though they gave me six months, at the end of three months, he died. And three months, two days, I was back at work. So I didn’t abuse the paid leave. I really worry about people who don’t have access to any paid leave," the 66-year-old says.
Nooyi, who was born in Madras (now called Chennai) in the year of 1955, is currently on the boards of Amazon and the International Cricket Council.
