The Supreme Court on Monday sought the views of the steel ministry on whether iron ore from Karnataka should be exported. The mines ministry has backed the move.
The top court had banned export of iron ore pellets in 2012 to check environmental damage in the border areas of the state adjoining Andhra Pradesh. The court had also laid down a cap on the amount that can be mined at 35 MMT for A and B category mines.
The sector has been clamouring for lifting the ban which it says has crippled the economy.
