JSW Utkal Steel, a subsidiary of JSW Steel, on Monday received the environmental clearance for setting up a greenfield steel plant in Odisha from the Union Ministry of Environment & Forest and Climate Change.
The 13.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant is expected to entail an investment of Rs 65,000 crore, the company said. It will be one of the largest manufacturing sites in the country and could take up to 5-7 years to reach its complete planned capacity.
Presently, JSW Steel’s manufacturing unit in Vijayanagar, Karnataka is the largest single location steel-producing facility in India with a capacity of 12 MTPA capacity. All subsidiaries put together, JSW Steel has a total capacity to manufacture around 28 MTPA of steel, which it is looking to increase to 37.5 MTPA by FY25.
The proposed plant has met staunch opposition from locals. Around two dozen villagers including women and teenagers protesting the construction of the JSW Utkal Steel plant were injured following a clash with the police in January. The police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protesters.
The Orissa High Court in an order dated 7 April disposed three public interest litigations (PIL) seeking judicial intervention against the action of police against people protesting the proposed steel plant in Dhinkia area of Jagatsinghpur district.
The land in Jagatsinghpur on which the plant will be constructed had earlier been awarded to South Korea’s steel giant Posco to set up a 12 MTPA steel plant. However, the multinational steelmaker withdrew from the project in 2017 and surrendered the land owing to resistance from locals and regulatory hurdles.
