Benchmark NSE Nifty closed 144.8 points up at 17784.35 amid buying in frontline bluechip counters.
However, stocks such as Vaxtex Cotfab, GMR Power and Urban Infra Ltd., Sonam Clock and OrissaBengalCarrier, touched their fresh 52-week lows.
Overall, 41 shares ended in the green in Nifty50 index, while 9 closed in the red.
In the Nifty 50 index, Grasim Inds., SBI Life, ITC, JSW Steel and M&M were among top gainers during the day, while Cipla, Tech Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, NTPC and Sun Pharma ended in the red.
The BSE Sensex closed 412.23 points up at 59447.18.
Traders piled up positions in Agro Processing, Packaging, Tobacco, Telecommunications and Defence sectors, while selling was witnessed in Industrial Consumables, Textiles, Irrigation & Allied Services, Pharmaceuticals and Retail sectors during the day.
