Following the policy of 'neighbourhood first', India has decided to support the economic crisis-ridden Sri Lanka through a loan of one billion dollars. Along with this, the Modi government at the Center has supplied about 2,70,000 metric tons of petrol-diesel to its neighbor Sri Lanka, despite the huge increase in the prices of essential fuel (petrol-diesel) by the public sector petroleum marketing companies in the country's retail market.
The Indian Embassy in Colombo tweeted on Thursday and informed that India has supplied diesel and petrol for the second time under a credit line to Sri Lanka to deal with the fuel crisis. India has so far sent more than 2.70 lakh metric tonne of fuel to Sri Lanka. At the same time, Sri Lanka has also expressed gratitude for providing medicines from India.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said on Thursday that India has given USD 2.5 billion in aid to the neighboring country in the last three months to overcome some of the economic difficulties being faced by the people of Sri Lanka. The spokesman said that this loan facility includes food grains and fuel. He also informed that India has supplied 2.70 lakh metric tonne of fuel to Sri Lanka till March 15. Apart from this, 40,000 tonne of rice has been supplied to Sri Lanka under the recently provided one billion dollar line of credit.
Public sector oil marketing companies in India have started increasing the prices of petrol and diesel once again from March 22, despite the fall in the prices of crude oil in the international market. Petrol prices in India have been increased by more than Rs 10 from March 22 till April 6. As a result of this, petrol in Delhi is of Rs 105.41 per liter while diesel is Rs 96.67 per liter.
Sri Lanka's world-winning captain and former Tourism and Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi after India provided financial help in times of crisis. He said that the focus of PM Modi is not only on giving money, but also on understanding their needs. That is why India is helping Sri Lanka with things like petrol and medicine. The Government of India is trying to provide all possible help to Sri Lanka, he also appreciated the efforts being made by India to revive the sinking economy.
Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has also praised the Government of India and PM Modi. Describing India as a big brother, Jayasuriya said that as a neighbor and elder brother of their country, India has always helped them.
