    Covid News Updates: Maharashtra reports 'first case' of XE Variant, Centre disagrees

    The Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation said that the city has reported India’s first case of the XE variant, which is a mutation of the strains of the Omicron variant and touted to be highly transmissible. However, INSACOG, India’s genomics consortium, claimed that the samples detected in Mumbai, which is said to have the XE strain of Covid-19, do not suggest the presence of the variant after genomic sequencing of the case.

    COVID case rates hit new high for England, study finds

    • Coronavirus infections in England climbed to a new record high with one in 16 or 6.37 per cent testing positive for COVID-19 last month -- more than double the one in 35 reported in February, according to a new study.
    • The vast majority of the analysed positive samples were the Omicron BA.2 “stealth variant”.
    • A very small number of recombinant Omicron variants - XE and XL - were also detected during the surveillance, which are hybrids of the original BA.1 Omicron strain and the BA.2 mutation.

    China launches new satellite for Earth observation
