A special CBI court here on Wednesday remanded former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s custody till April 11 in a corruption case registered against him and others. Deshmukh (71) was undergoing treatment at state-run J J Hospital and hence the probe agency could not take his custody along with the other accused. The senior NCP leader was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday evening and placed under arrest on Wednesday morning.

Earlier in the day, Justice Revati Mohite Dere of the Bombay High Court had turned down Deshmukh’s plea stating that the plea should be placed before another bench.

A 50-year-old fully vaccinated female, with a travel history to South Africa in February, has been identified as the first case of the new Covid-19 variant XE. As per the information provided by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the patient, a costume designer who was a member of a shooting crew, arrived from South Africa on February 10.

Meanwhile, the office of the inspector general of registration (IGR) has indicted 44 personnel allegedly for carrying out the registration of over 10,000 properties violating the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) Act. This step was a result of the Maharashtra government’s complaint to IGR officials over the registration documents of properties.

Two judges of Bombay HC refuse to hear Anil Deshmukh’s plea challenging court order allowing CBI his custody

Two judges of the Bombay High Court on Wednesday recused themselves from hearing a plea by former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh on Tuesday challenging the special CBI court’s order that allowed the central agency’s application seeking his custody in connection with an alleged corruption case.

Deshmukh also challenged a special PMLA court order which had allowed CBI’s application and directed the superintendent of Arthur Road jail in Mumbai to hand over his custody to the CBI investigating officer.

Deshmukh was taken into CBI’s custody on Wednesday and a special court reserved its order on CBI’s remand plea.

Pawar may have taken up with PM issue of appointment of MLCs by governor, say Ajit, Jayant Patil

NCP president Sharad Pawar might have discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi the delay in the appointment of 12 members to the state Legislative Council from the Governor’s quota, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said on Wednesday.

Sharad Pawar met Modi at the prime minister’s office in Parliament earlier in the day, giving rise to speculation as the meeting came amid intensified action by central probe agencies against leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition in Maharashtra.

Asked by reporters in Ahmednagar about the meeting, Ajit Pawar said he had no information about it, but the country’s prime minister and the national president of a party “can meet over developmental works”. (PTI)

Money laundering case: Court extends ED custody of Nagpur lawyer till Ap 11

A special PMLA court here on Wednesday extended till April 11 the remand of Nagpur-based lawyer Satish Uke and his brother Pradeep who were arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case, news agency PTI reported.

The brothers were arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) last week following a raid at the advocate’s residence in Parvati Nagar area of Nagpur.

The accused were produced before special judge M G Deshpande at the end of their initial remand on Wednesday. The duo’s custody was extended till April 11 for further probe into the matter.

Mumbai man allegedly cheated by two groups of cybercriminals, case registered

A 30-year-old graduate from Mumbai’s Kalachowkie was allegedly cheated by two women who lured him to join private video calls and later threatened to leak his videos if he did not pay them. Subsequently, the man said that he was cheated by another group of cybercriminals who asked him to pay a hefty amount on the pretext of offering him a job.

A case was registered at Kalachowkie police station under relevant sections of extortion, cheating and cheating by impersonation on Tuesday.

Resume duty by April 15: HC tells striking MSRTC employees

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the striking Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) employees to resume duty by April 15 and asked the corporation to take back its decision initiating disciplinary action against the errant workers.

Thousands of employees of MSRTC have been on strike since last November demanding that they be treated on par with state government employees and that the cash-strapped transport corporation be merged with the government.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M S Karnik noted that the Maharashtra government has accepted the report submitted by a three-member committee by which the demands for the merger of MSRTC with the state government and for the corporation workers to be treated as state government employees have not been accepted. Mumbai: Two arrested for last month’s robbery at senior citizen’s house

THE NAGPADA police have arrested two persons for allegedly barging into the house of a senior citizen couple in the early hours of March 19 and robbing them of cash and ornaments worth Rs 88.53 lakh. The police said the two accused, both former employees, tied the couple’s hands, legs and with two of their house helps asleep in neighbouring rooms, the duo walked away with Rs 25 lakh in cash, diamond and gold jewellery.

According to the police, the two arrested persons were Takatsingh Narsingh Rajput (22) and Dilip Karansingh Rajput (21) and they hail from Gujarat and Rajasthan respectively.

The police said Takatsingh left his caretaker’s job with the couple at the end of February while Dilip had previously worked as a driver with them.

Mumbai fully vaccinates 100% adult population against Covid-19, first major city to achieve feat

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced that all eligible beneficiaries above the age of 18 in Mumbai have been fully vaccinated with two doses of Covid-19 vaccine. Mumbai has thus become the first major city in the country to fully vaccinate 100% of its citizens. It also has the highest vaccination coverage among all the 36 districts in Maharashtra.

By Tuesday, Mumbai vaccinated its entire adult population of 92.39 lakh people with two doses of Covid-19 vaccine, confirmed officials.

Mumbai cops arrest suspended IPS officer Saurabh Tripathi’s brother-in-law in angadia extortion case

A Mumbai crime branch team probing the angadia (traditional couriers) extortion case has arrested assistant sales tax commissioner Ashutosh Mishra, brother-in-law of suspended IPS officer Saurabh Tripathi, from Basti in Uttar Pradesh, a police official said on Wednesday.

During the investigation, the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) found that Mishra had received the money allegedly extorted by DCP Tripathi, who is posted in Mumbai, he said. The CIU team apprehend Mishra, an Assistant Commissioner of Sales Tax, from Basti Tuesday, the official said. Mishra was produced before a court in Basti which granted his transit remand to the Mumbai Police, he said.

Angadias are traditional couriers who deliver cash sent by traders from one state to another. Angadia system is by and large used in the jewellery business. A complaint filed last December by the Angadia Association in south Mumbai had alleged that Tripathi demanded Rs 10 lakh per month from them as a bribe to allow them to run their business smoothly. Mumbai: Doctor duped of Rs 40,000 by cyber fraudster posing as customer care executive of bank

A 43-year-old woman has been allegedly duped of Rs 40,000 by a cyber fraudster posing as the customer care executive of a bank.

The Tilak Nagar police registered a first information report (FIR) on April 5 based on the complaint of the woman who is a dermatologist. The complainant told the police that around 4.50 pm on February 7, she received a phone call from the alleged fraudster who said he was calling from the ICICI bank and that her credit card had been blocked as she had not updated her know-your-customer (KYC) details.

Later, the doctor allegedly received another phone call from a different mobile number. This time the Truecaller app on her phone showed the number to be of ‘ICICI bank helpline’. Trusting that it was indeed a call from the bank, she followed the instructions given by the alleged fraudster to generate a one-time password (OTP) on her phone.

Mumbai: Woman tries to order wine online, loses Rs 4.80 lakh

A 32-year-old woman who tried to order wine from a local wine shop has been allegedly cheated of Rs 4.80 lakh. The Powai police registered a first information report (FIR) on the matter on April 5.

The woman told the police that she lives with her husband and works for a private company. Her sister-in-law came home on April 4 to meet them and they decided to order wine from a local wine shop, she told the police.

As per the FIR, around 8.30 pm, she searched for “wine shops near me” on Google and the number of one Om Sai beer shop in Powai popped up. She called the given number and an alleged fraudster told her they do not accept cash on delivery. The woman sent Rs 650 through Google Pay after which the fraudster called her and said that she had sent Rs 30 more than required, according to the FIR.

People will have to rebel in BJP gives ‘ghar ghar ED’ call: Shiv Sena

Slamming Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil for stating that he will ask the Enforcement Directorate to probe the alleged transfer of money to bribe voters in the upcoming Assembly bypoll in Kolhapur, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday said the people will have to “rebel” if the BJP gives “Ghar Ghar ED” call.

In an editorial in the party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the Sena wondered if the ED should probe voters in the states from where BJP won elections recently. The Sena dared the ED and the BJP to start the investigation from Panaji and Sakhal (Sanquelim) seats ? the constituencies won by BJP MLA Atanasio Monserrate and chief minister Pramod Sawant.

“Chandrakant Patil has a nice plan to get voters probed by the ED. If ‘Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi’ slogan is coupled with ‘Har Har ED, Ghar Ghar ED’, then people will have to rebel,” the Sena said. The Kolhapur North assembly constituency bypoll is scheduled to be held on April 12. The seat fell vacant after the death of sitting Congress MLA Chandrakant Jadhav last December. (PTI)

Two labourers killed, 5 injured as truck overturns in Palghar

Two labourers were killed and five others injured when the brick-laden truck in which they were travelling overturned on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on Wednesday morning near here in Palghar district, police said.

Three of the injured were in serious condition, they said. The deceased were identified by the police as Umesh Pawar, 25, and Damoo Pawar, 40. The truck carrying bricks was proceeding from Manor to Palghar when it overturned after the driver lost control over the vehicle apparently due to brake failure at Waghoba Khind, the police said.

An official at the Palghar police station said an offence under relevant sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act was registered against the truck driver who has not been arrested yet. (PTI)
