Nearly 24 hours after a massive fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site Monday afternoon, officials said it continued to rage in some parts of the area. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said more than 90 firefighters have been working since Monday to control the fire. At present, four fire tenders and six JCBs have been deployed at the landfill site. Local residents complained of difficulty breathing as fumes from the blaze spread to nearby colonies. Fire officials Tuesday said they have been facing multiple challenges in the firefighting operation.
A bill that seeks to raise the age of superannuation of members and chairman of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) up to 70 years was passed by the House on Tuesday. “The Delhi Electricity Reforms (Amendment) Bill, 2022 fixes the term of the members and chairman of DERC to five years or age of 70 years, whichever is earlier,” Delhi Power Minister Satyendar Jain said before the passing of the Bill.

The fourth person has been identified as Sukhwinder Singh, an e-rickshaw battery operator, belonging to Sardar Colony in Sector 16.
"We came to know that our friend's brother has entered the sewer line. Sukhwinder was on his rickshaw when he saw a crowd. As he came to know that some people are trapped, he immediately went inside to help and has been trapped since. He has three children. Hope he is safe," said Harinder Singh, an acquaintance.
Delhi Technological University (DTU) officials on Tuesday apprised Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal on the varsity's achievements during the last year, which included starting of centres for electric vehicles and happiness for students. Baijal was chairing the fourth meeting of the court of the university.
"Chaired the 4th meeting of the Court of Delhi Technological University. The court considered and approved the audited annual statement of the accounts and the annual report of the university for the year 2020-2021," he said in a tweet.
Lt Governor Baijal also said that he advised authorities to address and settle the "outstanding audit paras at the earliest". (PTI)

Nine people were injured after a fight broke out between two families over some issue in Delhi's Prahlad Vihar, police said on Tuesday. The incident came to light after a video went viral in which two groups of people were seen quarreling with each other. A woman was also seen being beaten up badly.
The incident is said to have taken place on March 14. On March 14, an incident took place between two families in the area of Prahlad Vihar, Rohini Sector-25, a senior police officer said.
Nine people -- six from one family and three from another family -- were injured in the fight, the officer said. Cross FIRs were registered in the matter, he said. (PTI)
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday visited a government school in Jahangirpuri and admonished an official for not ensuring adequate hygiene in the premises, according to an official statement.
Sisodia, who holds the Education Portfolio, visited Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in D- Block, Jahangirpuri. He spoke to the students about academic activities and their experiences of studying new curricula -- the Happiness Curriculum and the Deshbhakti Curriculum. He also reviewed the progress of the reading campaign at the school.
During the visit, Sisodia admonished the estate manager for not ensuring adequate hygiene in school premises. Sisodia said strict action will be taken against the officials concerned for lack of cleanliness on campuses. (PTI)

The Opposition BJP termed the Kejriwal government's 'Rozgar' budget "disappointing", as it showed a decline in GDP and rise in fiscal deficit.
Participating in a discussion on the budget in Delhi Assembly's budget session, Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri claimed in a statement that the GDP growth rate in the seven years of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has "come down to 67.7 per cent as against 147.6 per cent earlier".
"Delhi's fiscal deficit is increasing continuously," he said. In 2020-21, it increased to Rs 9,972.96 crore. This deficit has almost doubled in 2021-22 to Rs 18,776.67 crore, he said in the House. (PTI)
Former chief secretary Anshu Prakash on Tuesday told a Delhi court that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia were the "kingpins" of a conspiracy that led to him being assaulted in 2018.
Prakash made the submission during the hearing of an appeal filed by him against a trial court decision to discharge Kejriwal, Sisodia and nine other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs in the case. The criminal case relates to the alleged assault on Prakash during a meeting at Kejriwal's official residence on February 19, 2018.
Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra, appearing for Prakash, told Special Judge Geetanjli Goel that the trial court erred in its judgment of discharging the politicians in the case. (PTI)
Three workers fell into a sewer in northwest Delhi's Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar on Tuesday and efforts were underway to rescue them, police said. A man who had gone to help them also got trapped inside the sewer, they said.
According to the police, the information regarding the incident was received at Samaypur Badli police station around 6.30 pm. Police personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. Fire department officials were also part of the rescue operation.
Rescue efforts were underway and none of the four was pulled out yet, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Brijendra Kumar Yadav said. It was not immediately known how the workers got trapped inside the sewer. (PTI)
BJP MLAs Vijender Gupta and O P Sharma were marshalled out of the Delhi Assembly for the day by the speaker for allegedly obstructing the AAP members from raising law-and-order and other issues in the House.
The two opposition MLAs objected when the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators attacked the Centre over the law-and-order situation in the national capital.

With the municipal polls in the national capital getting delayed over the Centre's move to unify three corporations, the State Election Commission (SEC) of Delhi on Tuesday asked returning officers to allow employees requisitioned for the election to work in their respective departments.
The poll body, however, said that such staff will have to report at short notice to the returning officer concerned whenever required.
"Due to prevailing situations, where the Government of India has introduced a Bill in Parliament for unification of three Municipal Corporations of Delhi, general elections to municipal corporation(s) may take some time. (PTI)
A British national has been arrested for allegedly forging a document in the name of the finance ministry to stay proceedings against his company under a law to recover non-performing asset loans, police said on Tuesday.
London resident Bharat Amritlal Parikh's Gujarat-based GPT Steel industries Ltd was facing proceedings under the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act, 2002, they said.
The Act empowers banks and financial institutions of India to take over assets and properties of a borrower to recover an unpaid debt. Parikh is a charted accountant and is also engaged in the business of import and export of steel products. He is a British national with an Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) passport, police said. Delhi Transport minister Kailash Gahlot on Tuesday said from April 1, bus drivers who not ply on designated lanes will be slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 while repeat offenders can lose their driving licenses and get prosecuted under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The minister told the Delhi Assembly said the Transport department will launch the enforcement drive from April 1 under which all the DTC and cluster buses will follow lane discipline across the city.
He said the Traffic police has been asked for an intensive enforcement of the drive, and teams of Transport department will also be deployed. He said the Transport department will also soon launch a WhatsApp number on which people can send videos of violations by bus drivers. (PTI)
Delhi on Tuesday recorded its hottest day of the season with the maximum temperature settling at 39.2 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The mercury will rise further, it said.
The maximum temperature at the Safdarjung observatory, which is considered the official marker for the national capital, was recorded at 39.2 degrees Celsius, seven notches above the season's average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 18.8 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal.
Humidity levels oscillated between 79 per cent and 14 per cent. At many places in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), the maximum temperature was recorded at 40 degrees Celsius. Narela recorded a maximum temperature of 41.7 degrees Celsius, 10 notches above the normal. (PTI)
A Delhi court has said that there can be no stigma attached to former TERI chief R K Pachauri due to an alleged sexual harassment case since the prosecution could not prove its case while he was alive.
Pachauri died in February 2020 while his revision petition against an order to put him on trial in the case was pending before a court.The case was abated after his death.
Special Judge Mohinder Virat made the observation while dismissing a plea by Pachauri's son through advocate Ashish Dixit, who had sought a decision on his father's petition “on merits just to remove the stigma of this present criminal case on the deceased revisionist.” The court said the application filed by Pachauri's son was not maintainable. The Delhi High Court Tuesday refused to pass directions to the Centre on a public interest litigation seeking a probe into the allegations of siphoning of funds, which were collected by certain overseas organisations from the public in the name of Covid relief, towards terrorist activities.
A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi noted that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has already sought from the petitioner -- Mohammad Ashfaq Hussain, the relevant documents which form the basis of his claims and opined that there was no reason to assume that the central government was not alive to the problem.
“There is no reason for the court to assume that the central government and its agencies are not alive to the problem... We are of the view that no direction is called for on the petition,” said the bench which also comprised Justice Navin Chawla. (PTI)
The Special Cell unit of the Delhi Police has arrested twelve members of three gangs, who among other crimes were also involved in the murders of a gangster outside a Delhi court and an international Kabaddi player in Punjab, officials said on Tuesday.
These members belong to the gangsters Lucky Patial-Bambiha-Kaushal alliance and were involved in organised crimes in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Chandigarh, apart from having significant footprints in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, they said.
In order to expand their operations to the National Capital Region (NCR), they had partnered with local gangsters Sunil alias Tillu Tajpuriya and Neeraj Bawana, the police said. (PTI)

Harjot Singh, who was shot multiple times in Ukraine's capital Kyiv last month while fleeing the war-torn country, has been discharged from the Army hospital here.
His condition is now stable, his brother Prabhjot said on Tuesday. "He (Harjot) was discharged yesterday. He is doing fine but it will take time for him to recover properly," Prabhjot told PTI. Harjot's family has also sought financial help from the government for his treatment.
"Our financial condition is not very well. We urge the Indian government to help us in my brother's further treatment," Prabhjot said. Harjot was brought back to India on a special Indian Air Force flight on March 7. (PTI)
The Delhi government's 'Rozgar' budget worth Rs 75,800 crore for the financial year 2022-23 was passed by the Assembly after a debate on Tuesday. The Speaker adjourned the Assembly sine die after conclusion of the budget session that had started on March 23.
The budget presented last Saturday focussed on creating 20 lakh job opportunities in the next five years through boosting retail sector, redevelopment of famous markets and industrial areas in non-conforming zones, startups, tourism and promoting night-time economy.
Participating in the debate on the budget, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said various measures announced in the budget reflected Aam Aadi Party's ideology of "hardcore patriotism, diehard honest and humanity". (PTI)
