Coronavirus March 25 Latest News: Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar informed Parliament on Friday that few states and union territories have responded to the Centre’s requests to furnish details on Covid-19 mortalities due to oxygen shortage and as of now, none of them has reported confirmed deaths due to it.

Internationally speaking, Covid-19 Technical Lead at the World Health Organization, Maria Van Kerkhove, has said that the Omicron variant is sweeping the globe. She said Omicron is the latest variant of concern and about 86% of the sequences that are available for the last four weeks are this BA.2 sublineage. The rest are BA.1. The WHO has detected an increasing proportion of BA.2. However, Kerkhove added that the WHO is seeing a lower number of sequences being reported.

“It is absolutely critical that we have good surveillance worldwide, that we have strong testing and that we have intelligent sequencing with good geographic representation around the world,” Kerkhove said.

The Covid expert went on to stress that Omicron is a highly transmissible variant of concern. She informed that BA.2 is more transmissible than BA.1 and what WHO is starting to see in some regions of the world, in some countries, is an uptick in cases again.

“This is in the contect of omicron which is highly transmissible, but also in the context of lifting of public health and social measures. So whatever variant is circulating, if you lift all of the public health measures that we know can reduce the spread of this virus, the virus will take advantage of that,” Kerkhove said.
