The Israeli ministry of health confirmed it had recorded two new cases of a COVID-19 variant. "This variant remains a mystery worldwide," it said in a statement. Despite fears regarding the new variant, Israel's pandemic response chief allayed fears.
As with "Deltacron" - a strain that combined both Delta and Omicron variations of the COVID-19 virus - the new strain of COVID-19 combines two sub-variants of the Omicron version of the virus- BA.1 and BA.2. Hybrid versions of COVID-19 that combine two variants have been found before.
Israel's health ministry says neither of these two cases needed any special treatment. It said the symptoms observed so far are mild- fever, headache and muscle weakness.
As a result of PCR testing, the variant was discovered in two passengers who had been travelling through Israel's Ben Gurion airport.
Despite the phenomenon of combined variants being well established, Israeli Covid response chief Salman Zarka said, "at this point, we are not concerned about serious cases." This has provided some comfort to a world that longs for a return to normality after a pandemic-weary year.
Furthermore, Israel experienced its first COVID-19-related flue case in January, called Florona.
