Covid March 16 Latest News: According to the World Health Organisation, the number of new coronavirus deaths reported worldwide fell by 17% in the last week while COVID-19 infections rose, reversing a decline in cases that first began in January, according to the World Health Organisation. In a weekly report, WHO stated that there were more than 11 million new COVID-19 infections last week – about an 8% rise – and 43,000 new deaths. The number of COVID-19 deaths globally has been dropping for the past three weeks.

The Covid numbers are showing similar trend in India as well, just like the country saw last year around this time. After a considerable period of consistent decline, the country is witnessing a sustained rise in daily Covid19 infections as well as coronavirus-related fatalities.

As India began inoculating the 12-14 year-olds today, here are top 10 major pandemic-related developments from India and across the world:

1: India on Wednesday recorded yet another spike in Covid cases. The official data says that the country detected 2,876 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours.

2: The Covid death tally is also nearing 100 with 98 people dying due to coronavirus-related ailments, the health ministry bulletin says. However, the number of active cases continue to decline. The official number shows there are 32,811 active novel coronavirus cases in the country. This is 1,106 cases lesser than Tuesday.

3. Odisha on Wednesday reported 80 fresh Coronavirus cases, two more than yesterday, with the tally rising to 12,86,852. According to a health department bulletin, the Covid-19 death toll remained at 9,115 as no new deaths were reported for the second consecutive day. Kerala today registered 966 new Covid-19 cases and five deaths; the southern state still has 7,536 active Covid-19 cases.

4: In Europe, Germany is reporting a record high in daily Covid-19 cases. The surge in seven-day incidence of the coronavirus comes days before the German authorities planning to lift the Covid restrictions.

5: In an alarming development, the US government is set to run out of supplies of COVID-19 treatments, which are also known as monoclonal antibodies. This may happen as early as May-end. The White House says that unless US Congress approves more funds, the Biden administration may have to scale back operations.

6: China, which is battling the biggest outbreak since Wuhan crisis, recorded 1,860 new COVID-19 cases today. All this have been classified as local symptomatic infections. This is the fourth consecutive day of over a thousand new cases coming from China. Most of these cases are still centered in the northeast region of China, the official data says.

7: After Australia, New Zealand is also bringing forward the opening of its international borders to some travellers. This comes after a break of over two years of pandemic isolation. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said that the arrival of tourists will help in boosting the country’s economy.

8: In the field of medical science, Pfizer along with it German partner BioNTech have submitted an application to the US regulators. The pharam giant is seeking an emergency nod for a fourth booster dose, which would be administered if approved, to those aged 65 years and above.

9: In a bid to extend the vaccine coverage in the younger population, India on Wednesday commenced the inoculation programme for children between the age of 12 and 14-year-old. In national capital, parents were seen bringing in their kids to the vaccination centres. Officials say that around seven lakh children fall under this age group.

10: A latest study says that the Omicron infection is directly linked with a common respiratory illness in young kids. Termed as croup, it is a previously unrecognised complication of COVID-19, the study says.
