Mumbai News Live: Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray unveiled Mumbai’s Climate Action Plan (MCAP), set to be India’s first climate action plan to set a short, medium and long-term climate goals aimed towards a net-zero target of 2050. Low-carbon electricity, switch to 100 per cent zero-emission vehicles by 2050, flood-resilient infrastructure, localised water conservation and improved air quality monitoring are some of the highlights of the plan.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert with a warning of a heatwave in north Konkan, Thane, Mumbai and Raigad for the next two days. At 38.6 degrees Celsius day temperature on Sunday Mumbai is reeling under a heatwave.

In another development, the police Sunday tightened security outside the residence of senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis in South Mumbai and the BKC cyber police station ahead of the recording of his statement in a case of alleged illegal tapping of phones, an official said.

Central agencies working in vindictive manner against MVA leaders: Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Monday claimed that central probe agencies were "given targets" and they were working in a vindictive manner against leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra. Talking to reporters in New Delhi a day after Mumbai police recorded BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis's statement in a case of alleged illegal phone tapping, Raut said leaders of the MVA (comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) had also received notices from central agencies, but they did not stage dramas. He was apparently referring to the BJP staging protests in parts of Maharashtra on Sunday by burning copies of the notice issued to Fadnavis in connection with the case. --PTI

Heatwave alert issued for Thane, Mumbai and Raigad for two days

AT 38.6 degrees Celsius day temperature on Sunday Mumbai is reeling under a heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert with a warning of a heatwave in north Konkan, Thane, Mumbai and Raigad for the next two days.

According to the seven-day forecast for Mumbai, the IMD has issued a heatwave warning for the next 24 hours and temperatures soaring to 39 degrees.

Why some people think they are above law? Sanjay Raut on BJP's protest against police summoning Fadnavis

In the wake of the BJP's protest against Mumbai police recording Devendra Fadnavis's statement in a case of alleged illegal tapping of phones, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday asked why some people and political parties think of themselves as above the law and why "drama" was being created. Raut in a post on Twitter claimed that earlier central agencies had summoned several Maharashtra ministers and public representatives for probe into some cases out of "political vendetta".

There are no special rights for anyone in democracy and all are equal before the law, said the Rajya Sabha member and Shiv Sena's chief spokesperson, whose party shares power with the NCP and Congress in Maharashtra.

Declare 'The Kashmir Files' tax-free in Maha: BJP MLA writes to CM

BJP MLA Nitesh Rane has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray requesting that the recently-released film 'The Kashmir Files' be exempted from entertainment tax in the state. Rane stated in his letter sent on Saturday that the tax break will enable people to see for the first time the "correct and true depiction of atrocities inflicted by Muslim terrorists on the Hindu community" in Jammu and Kashmir.

'The Kashmir Files' movie, which depicts Hindus who fell prey to Muslim terrorism, should be declared tax-free in the state, Rane stated in the letter written in Marathi.

Mumbai first city in country with climate action plan, says Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday dedicated to the people the Mumbai Climate Action Plan and hailed the city for being the first in the country to have such a strategy in place. Speaking on the occasion, Thackeray pitched for sustainable development and said the city's administrators want to provide amenities to the people, but also stressed ensuring that citizens lead happy and healthy lives.

The chief minister participated in the event held at the Sahyadri Guest House via an online platform. The event was also attended by Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of State for Environment Sanjay Bansode and others.

Mumbai sets green targets for 2050 as Mumbai’s Climate Action Plan unveiled

Low-carbon electricity, switch to 100 per cent zero-emission vehicles by 2050, flood-resilient infrastructure, increase in and equitable access to green spaces, localised water conservation and improved air quality monitoring are some of the highlights of Mumbai’s Climate Action Plan (MCAP) unveiled on Sunday.

Launched by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the 240-page MCAP is India’s first climate action plan to set short, medium and long-term climate goals aimed towards a net-zero (zero emission of greenhouse gas) target for 2050.

The MCAP has also set an ambitious target of reaching complete carbon neutrality by 2050, two decades ahead of the country’s target of 2070, which was committed in COP-26 in Glasgow.

Navi Mumbai first city in Maharashtra to achieve 100% Covid-19 vaccination rate

Navi Mumbai is the first city in Maharashtra to achieve 100 per cent Covid-19 vaccination, with over 11 lakh people getting both doses, an official said on Sunday. Navi Mumbai municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijit Bangar said 111 vaccination centres had been set up to ensure 100 per cent inoculation against Covid-19.

Avoid mud-slinging, focus on development, Dy CM tells corporators

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday inaugurated several civic works executed by NCP corporators in Pune and asked them to focus on development and people's issues instead of political mud-slinging. Citing the path shown by yesteryear stalwart Yashwantrao Chavan, the deputy CM said people are not interested in allegations made by political parties.

"Chavan taught us how people on important posts must work for the people. As parties indulge in mud-slinging, people's issues are left behind. We should put an end to this and work for development," he said.

Maharashtra: National Lok Adalat settles claims worth over Rs 50.20 crore

The National Lok Adalat held at Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra has settled claims worth over Rs 50.20 crore in pending cases or pre-litigation matters, authorities said on Sunday. The Lok Adalat was held on Saturday, an official release by the District Legal Aid Services (DLAS) said.

Water level in drought-prone Marathwada’s Jayakwadi dam drops nearly 9%

The onset of summer has led to an 8.79 per cent drop in water levels in Jayakwadi dam, the biggest dam in Maharashtra’s drought-prone Marathwada region. At 76.21 per cent, the water level in the dam situated across the Godavari river in Aurangabad is much lower compared to last year’s 85 per cent at the end of the first week of March.

With summer set to peak in the months of April and May, the eight districts in Marathwada, which constantly face water shortage, may find themselves in a tight spot until the onset of monsoon during mid-June.

Highly placed sources in the water resources department said the water levels in dams are being closely monitored. "If necessary, course correction would be done to prioritise its release as per laid norms – first for drinking, then irrigation and lastly for industries," the source said. (Read More)

BJP workers burn copies of police notice issued to Fadnavis in phone tapping case

BJP workers in parts of Maharashtra burnt copies of a notice issued by Mumbai Police to senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis in connection with a case of alleged illegal tapping of phones.

Besides, a number of BJP leaders, including MLA Nitesh Rane, MLCs Prasad Lad and Pravin Darekar, and party leader Kripashankar Singh, gathered outside Fadnavis's residence in south Mumbai, where a team of the BKC cyber police reached around noon to record the latter's statement in connection with the case.

The party workers staged protests and burnt copies of the police notice in various parts of the state, including Pune, Pandharpur (in Solapur district), Nagpur, Chandrapur and Sangli.

Don't discard masks as yet, continue to follow precautions, says Ajit Pawar

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar Sunday urged people not to discard the masks as yet and follow guidelines even though cases of Covid-19 are on the decline in the state, which was badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Pawar, while addressing a party function, said, "Although Covid-19 cases have declined and lockdown is over, people should continue to exercise precautions. It is better to keep the mask on to avoid Corona." 

While outlining the importance of taking precautionary measures, he said conforming to Covid-19 guidelines like wearing the face mask and using sanitisers is essential. Read more

Heat wave likely over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad over next two days

Heat wave conditions are 'very likely' to prevail in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad during the next two days, the IMD Mumbai forecasted.

At 38.9 degrees Celsius, Mumbai on Saturday recorded hottest day of the season. Saturday's maximum temperature was also six degrees above normal. The minimum or night temperature on Sunday was also above normal. IMD's Santacruz observatory recorded minimum temperature at 22.5 degrees Celsius, a degree above normal.

As per the IMDs forecast, the minimum temperature is likely to rise to 24 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours

Mumbai-Goa NH widening: HC criticises pace of work, seeks progress report by June 6

Observing that the pace of progress of the widening of the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66), which started in 2010, is “disappointing, to say the least”, the Bombay High Court expressed “extreme displeasure” on the same, directed that the work be sped up and sought a progress report in three months.

“The pace of progress is disappointing, to say the least. Even in respect of packages, where little work was required to be undertaken, has not been completed. Expressing our extreme displeasure with such progress, we encourage the engineers deputed at the site(s) to call upon the contractors/agencies deputed for construction work to speed up such progress,” the court said. Court reduces police escort charges for 1993 blast convict

THE BOMBAY High Court on Friday directed a 1993 Mumbai bomb blast convict, Riyaz Ahmed Siddique, serving life imprisonment at the Yerwada Central Jail to pay Rs 50,000 for a police escort to attend the marriage ceremony of his son for four days. Siddiqui had applied for parole for the event.

The Pune prison authorities had allowed Siddique’s plea for emergency parole with a rider to bear expenses of Rs 2.55 lakh for four days, which was 50 per cent of the estimated cost of escort charges. However, Siddique highlighted his financial constraints and approached the High Court against the prison authorities’ orders. The court found the cost to be “exorbitant” and reduced it to Rs 50, 000 for four days. Read more

Fishermen threaten protest if sea bridge built between Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade

The All Maharashtra Fishermen’s Action Committee (AMFAC) has threatened to launch an agitation against the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) if it goes ahead and builds a sea bridge between Nariman Point and Cuffe Parade.

The MMRDA plans to construct the 1.3 km of sea bridge to decongest the interior roads of south Mumbai and connect it to the under-construction coastal road from Nariman Point.

The fishermen have claimed that the project would affect their fishing activity and small fishermen would have to be rehabilitated. Read more

Construction of new GST building to start next month

The work on the construction of the 30-storey State Goods and Service Tax (GST) building will start next month as the tendering process is complete and a contractor has been appointed.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is executing the project. The building will come up in the Wadala area at an estimated cost of Rs 1,810 crore.

Officials said that the building will also have a training centre and an auditorium where training programmes for officers and staff will be conducted. Read more

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) protested the announcement made by a minister to suspend a doctor at the state-run J J Hospital here for shortage of medicines.

Medical Education Minister Amit Deshmukh on Friday had announced the suspension of a doctor working at the hospital for issuing a prescription for medicines which were not available in the hospital. The minister made the announcement while responding to a question in the Legislative Council on the shortage of medicines at the JJ hospital which caters to the people from economically weaker sections of society in a big way.

"A doctor can not be held responsible for the hospital not having basic medicines. Most of them were basic medicines but the hospital does not have them," the IMA said in a statement.
