Russia Ukraine News LIVE Updates: Russia blocks Facebook, passes 'fake news' law
Russia said it would block Facebook for excluding state media and CNN said it would stop broadcasting in Russia after a new law punishing "fake news" raised the stakes in Moscow's fight with foreign corporation. Friday marked an escalation in the dispute that began after the invasion of Ukraine. Russia blocked a wave of media companies and new, big names announced they were shutting down Russia sales, including Microsoft Corp and video game maker Electronic Arts Inc. Russia said that Meta Platforms Inc's Facebook was being blocked for restricting state-backed channels, and it also blocked websites of the BBC, Deutsche Welle and Voice of America for what it said was false information about the war in Ukraine. Twitter will also be blocked, Russian media said. The BBC said it would temporarily suspend its work in Russia after introduction of a new law that could jail anyone found to be intentionally spreading "fake" news.

Zelenskyy slams NATO's decision not to implement no-fly zone over Ukraine
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has slammed NATO's decision not to implement a no-fly zone over Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia."A NATO summit took place today. It was a weak summit, a confused summit, a summit that shows that not everyone considers the fight for freedom in Europe the number one goal," Zelenskyy said in a video message, as quoted by Russia's Sputnik. Zelenskyy accused the members of the military alliance of giving Russia "the green light to start shelling Ukrainian cities and villages."
Biden and Finnish president commit to strengthening U.S.-Finnish security cooperation, says White House
- U.S. President Joe Biden and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto committed during talks on Friday to starting a process that will strengthen the two nations' security cooperation, the White House said. Biden and Niinisto also discussed the importance of NATO's Open Door policy, the White House said in a statement after the meeting between the two leaders.
Western governments and tech platforms have also banned the Russian news network RT, with the European Union accusing it of systematic disinformation over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
UN Security Council to meet Monday on humanitarian crisis in Ukraine: Diplomats
- The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Monday on the humanitarian crisis triggered in Ukraine by the Russian invasion, diplomats said Friday. After this public session, the 15 members of the council will confer behind closed doors to discuss a possible draft resolution, a diplomat speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP.
Russia passes 'fake news' law
- Lawmakers passed amendments to the criminal code making the spread of "fake" information an offence punishable with fines or jail terms. They also imposed fines for anyone calling for sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
BBC halts reporting in Russia after new law, Bloomberg and Canada's CBC follow suit
- The BBC said on Friday it had stopped reporting in Russia after parliament passed a law there imposing a jail term of up to 15 years for anyone found to be intentionally spreading "fake" news.Russian officials have said that false information has been spread by Russia's enemies such as the United States and its Western European allies in an attempt to sow discord among the Russian people.
