Mahindra & Mahindra(up 1.53 per cent), Amara Raja Batteries(up 0.55 per cent) and MRF(up 0.41 per cent) were among the top gainers.
Maruti Suzuki(down 4.08 per cent), Bajaj Auto(down 3.56 per cent), Hero MotoCorp(down 2.98 per cent), Bharat Forge(down 2.74 per cent) and TVS Motor Company(down 2.04 per cent) were the top losers on the index.
The Nifty Auto index was down 1.66 per cent at 10641.35 at the time of writing this report.
Benchmark NSE Nifty50 index was down 227.75 points at 16566.15, while the BSE Sensex was down 904.51 points at 55342.77.
Among the 50 stocks in the Nifty index, 12 were trading in the green, while 38 were in the red.
Shares of Vodafone Idea, YES Bank, SAIL, Coal India Ltd and HDFC Life were among the most traded shares on the NSE.
Shares of Kalyani Commercials, Madhya Bharat Agro, Hindalco, NALCO and Mangalam Global Ent hit their fresh 52-week highs in today's trade, while SoftTech Engineers, Felix Industries, Richa Info Systems Ltd., Nidan Laboratories And Healthcare Ltd. and HDFC hit fresh 52-week lows in trade.
