Benchmark NSE Nifty closed 187.95 points down at 16605.95 amid selling in frontline bluechip counters.
However, stocks such as Dr. Reddys, Richa Info Systems Ltd., SoftTech Engineers, Felix Industries and Hind Nat Glass, touched their fresh 52-week lows.
Overall, 15 shares ended in the green in Nifty50 index, while 35 closed in the red.
In the Nifty 50 index, Coal India Ltd, HDFC Life, SBI Life, Tata Steel and Hindalco were among top gainers during the day, while Maruti Suzuki, Dr. Reddys, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp ended in the red.
The BSE Sensex closed 778.38 points down at 55468.90.
Traders piled up positions in Mining, Metals - Non Ferrous, Cables, Metals - Ferrous and Agriculture/Horticulture/Livestock sectors, while selling was witnessed in Industrial Consumables, IT Enabled Services, Building Materials, Irrigation & Allied Services and Construction sectors during the day.
